It's been seven months since the Baltimore Orioles traded Manny Machado to the Los Angeles Dodgers, but the shortstop hasn't forgotten.
Machado agreed to a $300 million deal with the San Diego Padres as a free agent last week.
"The Dodgers last year, they showed me some love," he says. "The Orioles drafted me. I did a lot for that community, I did a lot for the state, and they didn't show me a little bit of love. It is what it is. But going over to L.A., L.A. giving up a lot of prospects for me, that kind of shows you what I meant to them, which is amazing."
The Orioles drafted Machado with the third overall pick in 2010.
The San Francisco Giants have had a second meeting with free-agent Bryce Harper.
Harper and agent Scott Boras met with Giants CEO Larry Baer and president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi.
In the talks, the possibility of a 10-year contract was discussed.
Harper, 26, is looking for a deal in excess of the 10-year, $300 million contract the Washington Nationals reportedly offered him at the end of the regular season.
The Toronto Blue Jays will likely keep Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the minor leagues to begin the 2019 season in order to extend their team control for as long as possible under the MLB's service time rules.
“There’s so many opportunities for him defensively, and what he can do to really maximize the power and the size and the strengths that he has," said Ross Atkins. "And everyone then points to defense but it’s really not just about defense, it’s about him having a 15, 20-year career and starting with an incredible foundation. And that’s everything that encompasses teammate [?], that’s the physical aspect, the base-running, the defense. And that physical aspect really plays into what type of offensive player he’s going to be. And I think he has the ability to be so versatile and dynamic, and we want to make sure we tap into all of that potential.”
Atkins also said of Guerrero, “I just don’t see him as a major-league player. He’s 19.”
Guerrero received an 80 prospect grade according to Baseball America, the highest grade possible on the scouting scale. The publication says Guerrero “might immediately rank among the top overall hitters in baseball.”
The St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to a four-year contract extension with Mike Mikolas, according to multiple reports.
The deal is worth $68 million and will kick in 2020 and run through 2023.
The 30-year-old is entering the second year of a two-year, $15.5 million deal.
The Colorado Rockies are finalizing an eight-year, $260 million contract extension with Nolan Arenado, according to league sources.
The deal, which includes a full no-trade clause, could last through the 2026 season.
Arenado could have become a free agent later this year.
The overall value of Arenado's deal will fall short of the $300 million Manny Machado received from the San Diego Padres, but will top Machado's $30 million a year salary.
Spring Training games have begun and Dallas Keuchel remains on the free agent market.
Keuchel has been working out at Rice University to prepare for the season and recently commented on his situation.
"I'm calm and collected outside the field," he said. "So I really don't hit the panic button at all. I'm worried about getting myself ready and up to speed. I feel like I'm ahead of schedule compared to the last few years so that's nice to see.
"At the same time, I'd like to get out there and meet new teammates or meet old teammates. So when that time comes it will be nice, but I'm just trying to get myself ready."
Bryce Harper is expected to reach his free agency decision by the end of the current week.
The bidding is down to the Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants.
The Dodgers re-entered the bidding for Harper with interest in a short-term contract. The Giants also have interest in signing Harper on a short-term deal, but ownership may overrule their front office as they look to make another signing similar to when they signed Barry Bonds in the early 1990s.
The Washington Nationals previously offered Harper a 10-year, $300 million contract in September, but are out of the running. The Chicago White Sox are also out on signing Harper.

The New York Yankees have agreed to a seven-year, $70 million contract extension with Aaron Hicks.
The deal includes the 2019 season, according to a report.
Hicks was scheduled to become a free agent after this season and he'll now be controlled through his age-35 season.
Teams are once again taking a slow approach to free agency and J.D. Martinez has had enough.
The Boston Red Sox slugger didn't land his own free-agent deal until Feb. 26 last season. He views the business of baseball as broken.
"One-hundred-percent," Martinez told WEEI.com. "I knew it was -- Why wouldn't it? They got away with it last year, why wouldn't they do it again? What's going to happen? Nothing. It's embarrassing for baseball, it really is. It's really embarrassing for the game. You have a business. They say, 'The market is down, the market is changing.' The market is higher than it's ever been. People are making more money than ever, and they're trying to suppress it. It's more of a race towards the bottom now than a race towards the top. You can go right now through everyone's lineup and you already know who's going to be in the playoffs. What's the fun in that? We might as well just fast-forward to the end of the season."
